Today being August 4th, 2022 Republic of Benin Commissioned its 100 feet tall monument to the Ahosi (Dahomey Amazons). As someone who's been a persistent defender of the  Dahomey Empire & its legacy, this warms my heart. More African nations need to reclaim & celebrate their warrior legacy.

The Ahosi (Amazons) of Dahomey were a military corps of women appointed to serve in battles under the direction of the Fon king, who ruled over a nation that included much of present-day southern Togo and southern Benin. They emerged during the Eighteenth Century and were finally suppressed during the 1890s. The Amazons were chosen from among the nominal wives of the king, called “Ahosi.” Estimates of the number of women soldiers vary by accounts, yet some scholars believe the numbers to have ranged over time from several hundred to a few thousand women soldiers.

The Fon women’s army had three main wings: the right and left wings, and the elite center wing or Fanti. Each of these wings had five subgroups: the artillery women, the elephant huntresses, the musket-bearing frontline group, the razor women, and the archers. They served in battles in conjunction with male troops.

These women soldiers had extensive training and drilling. The Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Amazons used flintlock muskets. They also used cannon, and later modern artillery and machine guns. Subject to celibacy under pain of death, they could not marry once they became Amazons nor could they have children. In addition to their military duties, the Amazons also had daily occupations within the royal household. These occupations included indigo dyeing, weaving and selling mats, palm oil production and distribution, as well as sewing and embroidering cotton cloth.

History of Owerri Owerri was founded about the 14th century by a man regarded as founding father and his name is Ekwem Oha. His mother's name was Arugo. He fled from Umuori Village, Uratta in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State when his life was threatened by his younger brother Ndum. The threat to his life arose from the dispute over the sharing of the Funeral Cow slaughtered when their father Oha the aristocrat and embodiment of royalty died. Queen Amina of Zaria, also known as the warrior queen, was the first woman who ruled an African kingdom for over 30 years in the sixteenth century.  Amina was a Hausa Muslim a historical figure in the city-state Zazzau (present-day city of Zaria in Kaduna State), in what is now in the northwest region of Nigeria. Commonly known as the warrior queen, Queen Amina of Zaria was the first woman to become the Sarauniya(queen), in a male-dominated society during her reign between 1576 to 1610. She expanded the territory of the Hausa people of north Africa to its largest borders in history. Early Life Amina was born in the middle of the sixteenth century CE to King Nikatau, the 22nd ruler of Zazzau, and Queen Bakwa Turunku (r. 1536– c.  1566). She had a younger sister named Zaria for whom the modern city of Zaria (Kaduna State) was renamed by the British in the early twentieth century.
