Reasons why Ologosere, a Chief of the Benin Kingdom was hanged by the British in 1899

He was hanged by the British at 8am on 4th July 1899. Ologosere, a Chief of the Benin Kingdom who fought a guerrilla war for 2 years against the British occupation. To the British, he was treacherous and barbaric, but to many Edo people he was a symbol of resistance against the British Invaders.

History of Owerri Owerri was founded about the 14th century by a man regarded as founding father and his name is Ekwem Oha. His mother's name was Arugo. He fled from Umuori Village, Uratta in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State when his life was threatened by his younger brother Ndum. The threat to his life arose from the dispute over the sharing of the Funeral Cow slaughtered when their father Oha the aristocrat and embodiment of royalty died. The first son (Opara in Igbo) Ekwem was to provide the funeral cow as demanded by custom. He did not have the means to do so. He appealed to his younger brother Ndum popularly known as Ndumoha to buy the cow, which he did. The river takes its name from Ota Miri, a deity who owns all the waters that are called by his name, and who is often the dominating god of Mbari houses.  The river runs south from  Egbu  past  Owerri  and through  Nekede ,  Ihiagwa ,  Eziobodo , Olokwu Umuisi, Mgbirichi and  Umuagwo  to Ozuzu in  Etche , in the  Rivers State , from where it flows to the Atlantic Ocean.
