THE IGBO LANDING
In May 1803 75 igbo slaves from EASTERN NIGERIA revolted, took control of their slave ship, grounded it on Dunbar creek, St. Simon island, Glynn County, Georgia and rather than submit to slavery, proceeded to march in to the water holding hands while singing a native igbo song, drowning themselves in.
The slaves have been chained and put aboard ship to be transported to their destination, during this voyage they took control of the ship and drowned their captors.
The event's moral value as a story of resistance towards slavery has symbolic importance in African American folklore and literary history, it had been named as the First major freedom match in American history.
This event is referred to as "THE IGBO LANDING "
