Amalgamation meeting, Lagos 1914.

On the first of January 1914, the Northern and Southern Protectorates were merged together as one and Nigeria as we have it today was born.

Martiniano Eliseu do Bomfim Yoruba name was Òjélàdé, (1859-1943), was born in Bahia, Brazil. His father was a member of the Egba, one of the Yoruba sub-groups, had been brought to Brazil as a slave in 1820 and liberated there in 1842. A 16-year-old Martiniano accompanied his father, Eliseu do Bomfim, who was an import/export trader of Yoruba goods, on a trip from Salvador, Bahia to Lagos, Yorubaland in 1875 for the purpose of attending school and learning a trade. In Lagos he attended the Church Missionary Society Alápákó Fàájì School for almost 11 years. He arrived back in Salvador on January 30, 1886. During his time in Lagos Martiniano became fluent not only in English but also in Yoruba. He also acquired knowledge of Ifá, the Yoruba system of divination and became a Babalawo, as well as being trained as a bricklayer and house painter. Back in Bahia he worked as an English teacher for well to do Afro-Brazilians. Martiniano died on November 1, 1943 in Salvador, Bahia....

Oguta Lake: The Mysterious lake, where 2 rivers flow side by side but do not mix

Oguta Lake: The Mysterious Lake in Imo State.  Oguta Lake is a lean 'finger lake' formed by the damming of the lower Njaba River with alluvium which consists of clay, sand and also silt. It is the largest natural lake in Imo State, Southeastern Nigeria; within the equatorial rainforest region of Niger Delta.  The lake is 8.05km long and 2.41km wide. The water in the lake actually flows from Njaba lake. Two out of the lakes mentioned flow together but do not mix together. Once you look at the lake from afar you would notice that they do not mix. One part of Oguta Lake in Imo State, Nigeria is blue, the other part is brown but they never mix. This lake is seen as mysterious because it consists of two different waters, one part of the lake is brown while the other part of it is greenish. *HISTORY OF KING EYO HONESTY II AND HIS IMPACT IN OLD CALABAR * Eyo Honesty II was the king of Creek Town, one of the Southern Nigerian towns of the Efik people who presently constitute the chief population of Calabar. Eyo is remembered in history for his modernizing effort, and for being an instrument by which British rule became enacted in the Niger Delta. His name, Honesty had stuck, in T.J. Hutchinson’s 1858 account, because of his honest and progressive outlook.  Born in c.1788 into a middling dynasty, Eyo enjoyed the privilege as a child to learn the English language, good for trade, and to travel across oceans while he served as a cabin boy under some English Captains. He rose by the strength of his commercial acumen and industry to become, before the year 1846, the wealthiest Efik.
